Learning Resource Center OUR MISSION To provide a source of healing and hope to learning challenged students and their families. OUR VISION To provide affordable tutoring for students with learning challenges due primarily to dyslexia by using scientifically researched material in a nurturing and self esteem building environment. NIH Research Shows Dyslexia… 1. Affects 20% of our population or 1 out of 5 2. Is identifiable with 92% accuracy at ages age 5 ½ to 6 ½ 3. Is the most common and prevalent of all known learning disabilities. 4. Is the leading cause of reading failure and school drop outs in our nation 5. Is highly hereditary 6. Is successfully conquered with early intervention OUR PROGRAM Our program began in 2004 with three dyslexic students in a pilot program tutoring for two hours a week. Since that time we have expanded our tutoring service not only to our TCS students but also to our community and beyond. We offer private tutoring to children and also offer dyslexic resources for parents if they are interested in tutoring their own child. The Barton Reading and Spelling system that we use is based on a two to three year process (depending on how many times a week tutoring takes place). To begin our program we recommend a minimum of tutoring twice a week; however, tutoring is available five times a week if it is desired. We are thrilled with the results of the program and with the progress of our students. Students are learning to read phonetically rather than by sight and guessing by the shape of the word. They are understanding how to spell by breaking words into syllables and including all the letters of the word. It’s very exciting to see the process develop. Check out our student and parent testimonies to learn how it’s made a marked difference in their lives. To Learn More about our Dyslexia Program To learn more about our Dyslexia Program, call our Trinity Christian School office at 818-352-7980 and ask to speak to our director, Pam Busta. Jennifer Chavez - daughter 1 year in the program “When our daughter began tutoring at the LRC she was a very discouraged young lady. She had been through FOUR reading programs with very little success, and was sure she would never be a reader. Our sweet girl had given up. Now less than a year later with the help of the Barton System, things are very different. Not only is Maddy reading directions, advertisements, and signs along the road, she is happy to work on her reading skills. Just today she read a chapter of a book aloud in front of the other kids as they worked on their own assignments. It is wonderful to see her feeling comfortable, self assured, and hopeful. Thank you for providing such a great program; it has been an enormous blessing to our family.” Shiryl Schniebner - home school parent “We are a home school family with two dyslexic children. We were frustrated and struggling in most of our school work, especially in Reading and Math skills. Since we have been doling the Barton Program, our children have a better self-esteem about themselves and comprehend more of their school work. It’s been an awesome experience and we are very grateful for this program.” Victoria Stafford - parent of 4th grade student “I want to thank you for your dyslexia tutoring program. My family was so relieved to find your school. It was recommended to us by a teacher as well as a fellow student currently in your tutoring program. . . . .. I was surprised last week when Andrew asked me to take him to the book store so he could pick out new books. He asked for 5 books; a new book was not something that he usually asks for. He read his first choice in one night easily and with terrific comprehension. . . .. I tell you this story because of the amazing growth in his reading is in fact HUGE. I literally cannot keep up with the jumps in his ability from each and every session. We as a family are so grateful that your school offers to our community such a wonderful opportunity. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of Trinity School’s extended family.” Dawn Januzik - parent of 2nd grade student “Your program for Dyslexia at Trinity Christian School, has been a blessing for Stephen and me. It has given Stephen back his self esteem and confidence to get through learning to read and write. The joy and sparkle in his eyes, that made him so special, have returned to his face. He was struggling with homework 3 HOURS each day after school before he began this program and now his is able to get his work done and comprehend what he is doing in less than HALF that time. I am confident that the tools and patience he is getting from this program and your tutors is the key to his success and future success.” “As a person with Dyslexia, I have learned to compensate to get through college and life, but when I see what tools Stephen is learning, I know that I was just getting by and not maximizing my full potential.” Miss Gutermuth - 6th grade Trinity Christian School Teacher “I taught a particular student for two years. The year she was NOT in the LRC program she struggled with pronouncing words, and her reading was choppy. After one year in the program, she was able to decode words and read much smoother. I saw a 180 degree change. It was remarkable.”
